My name is Nisha and I am a South Asian children’s book illustrator with a passion to create loveable characters in whimsical worlds!
Born in India and raised in the Middle-East, I developed a deep appreciation for rich colours, detail and culture. I have always had the passion to create. When I was around 6 years old, my ‘Ammamma aka my grandmother’ introduced me to her sewing machine. I spent hours of my summer holidays on it and I enjoyed making little clothes for my dolls and bears. Obviously, when the time came, I chose fabric as my preferred medium of creative expression and decided to become a Fashion Designer.
Through my years in Fashion school, I was repeatedly told, that my fashion illustration style was too “cutsey” and probably more children’s wear appropriate. It broke my heart a bit, because I wanted to design clothes for women, not kids! Soon I graduated and worked in fast fashion for more than a decade and a half! Even then, I would always find myself drawing fun characters wearing cool runway trends! Now that I look back, I see - I always had a little bit of that ‘story telling’ somewhere in my artistic soul!
Fast forward to the pandemic, thats when my daughter was born, I wanted to document my experiences of mother hood, the way I saw it, through doodles. We were all cooped at home and I found myself spending every free mom- minute I could find - drawing the tantrum of the day or the milestone of the hour, inspired by my daughter!! I drew beyond mother hood experiences. I started to draw stories, imaginary worlds and more. This was how I discovered the art and the world of visual storytelling! While drawing came quite naturally to me from a very young age, creating enchanting worlds and the characters that spark a sense wonder, was something I fell in love with!
Now, with one published illustrated book under my belt and a lot of commissions later - I am actively seeking representation within the children’s picture book world. Being a self taught artist, I have come a long way, but I do have a long way to go as well. The learning never stops - but I cant complain - when all this creation brings me nothing but joy!
What mediums do I work with?
I enjoy experimenting with paper textures, inks, gouaches, crayons, pencils and digital tools!! Ill be honest, I do miss working with fashion, fabrics and patterns. If you pay real close attention to my works, I do put in a lot of technical details and fun elements into the clothes all my characters wear! It is the fashion designer in me! :)
My dream project ?
To illustrate a children’s picture book about a Fashion Designer or a costume maker!! Just thinking of all the delicious pictures and details that can be drawn, gives me butterflies in my belly!!
